High fired earthenware is more durable than regular earthenw are. The pieces are dipped in black-stained clay slip called "engobe." The engobe absorbs into the unfired clay body, creating a colored clay surface. The pieces are then dipped in translucent white glaze so the black stain shows through and lends an antiqued feel. Keeping the translucency of the white glaze is a difficult process-it must be stirred by hand before each piece is dipped. The shape for this collection was inspired by a vintage wood board found at a london flea market.
